Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard'

Apple have announced Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' will ship on 26th October, 2007.

• The latest version of the Mac OS X operating system includes over 300 new features, including the much talked about 'Time Machine' built-in backup and restoration software. Time will tell which of the new features and improvements are really useful, and which are clever eye-candy.

• With the new system release comes a raise in the bar of minimum system requirements, so be sure to check your Mac conforms before rushing out and buying your copy.

Note that this release of Mac OS X doesn't support Classic - so if you have legacy Mac OS 9 applications that you can't upgrade, and if your Mac doesn't boot up into Mac OS 9, then you may want to hold off on Leopard and stay with Tiger on a PowerPC Mac.

• Customers who purchase a Mac from the Apple Online Store or Authorised Reseller from 1st October - 29th December 2007 that doesn't come with Leopard pre-installed may qualify for a free upgrade.

• If you're contemplating upgrading from an earlier version of Mac OS X, it's important to do your homework first and plan the upgrade process properly, as with any new release of system software there will be issues that arise, as no two installations are identical and it's impossible to test for every possible combination and permutation of hardware and software out there. I recommend you spend a few dollars on the Take Control of Upgrading to Leopard ebook, which will take you step-by-step through the preparation and upgrade process. I would also recommend exercising caution and restraint if you're in a critical production environment, and hold off until the 10.5.1 Update inevitably comes out a few weeks after the initial release. It doesn't always pay to be on the bleeding edge of technology!

• If nothing else, invest in an external Firewire hard-drive and make a clone copy of your existing installation - that way you can always go back if things don't work out just the way you expect. Drives are inexpensive and free software makes it easy. That's your insurance in the first instance, and secondly it becomes your Time Machine backup drive for when you're up and running!

• Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' can be pre-ordered from the Apple Online Store for free delivery on 26th October. Single user license is $158.00 inc GST, and Family 5-User Pack $249.00 inc GST.
